When it comes to learning something new, I find I learn by doing best. So with multiple birthdays coming up, and the holidays, I decided to crochet a triangle shawl. Well, actually, first I decided, on a scarf, then I saw a few triangle shawls and decided on that instead. I love gifts with multiple uses, and having a shawl that can also be used as a scarf was a great idea to me. After looking through a few I noticed that a lot of them have puff stitches in them. Don't get me wrong here, I LOVE using puff stitches, but I do not make any more projects with puff stitches if I am using velvet yarn. I am planning on making a couple velvet shawls and when I've made a couple hats using velvet yarn the puff stitches actually started to unravel and twist up individual strands. This was fine, but not visually appealing to the receivers. This is when I decided to design this beautiful Marie Triangle Shawl.

Growing up, if you got cold during the fall and winter seasons, that's just life. You were told to put some clothes on and cover up with a blanket. Even though I am an adult now and can turn the heat up any time I want, (can I?) I still teach my children these same lessons. I understand that not everyone around the world has the luxury of indoor heating (yes, it is a luxury) and I want my kids to know this as well. Now that it's getting colder out, the summer clothes are being vacuum sealed away until next year. We're getting out the warmer long sleeves, flannel pajamas, and thicker blankets.
While we were switching the blankets, I found an old Biederlack blanket I had as a kid. These blankets were made right in my hometown. My uncle used to work there and I remember getting a new "Biederlack" every couple of years. They are the warmest, and thickest blankets that I can remember from my childhood. I don't know if they are still made today, but I wanted to make all my kids their own blanket that they could have through their lives as well. Since mama crochets, I got some Bernat Velvet yarn from Yarnspirations and got to making up a pattern. For a reference, I bought 6 skeins which have 315yds in each skein so that's a total of 1,890yds. I still had some left over, plenty that if I wanted to make it a little larger I would be able to.

When it comes to crochet projects, appliques are a great way to add a theme to an otherwise plain piece. Holidays, seasons, or just embellishments, the possibilities are endless. When it comes to fall appliques, there are so many iconic imagery. From pumpkins, apples, and other harvested food, to scarecrows, fall leaves, and other holiday themed appliques. Fall is the beginning of the most profitable period of time for yarn crafters. Scarves, hats, blankets, and gloves, all start really taking off. All of which are projects that can use appliques. So today, I'd like to teach you how to make a mini acorn applique. You can use it individually on a project, or place it around pumpkins and fall leaves for a beautiful arrangement on your crocheted and knitted items.

We've all done it. Busy making Thanksgiving dinner, family are on their way, rushing around the kitchen, and you accidentally knock the kitchen towel off the stove handle. Maybe instead you have children, and after washing their hands their in a hurry to get back to what little kids do, they halfheartedly dry their hands and it slips to the floor on their way out of the room. That's when I became a fan of kitchen towel holders. Wait a minute, I don't have to buy them and can easily make them at home? They're super easy to make and can match the theme I use in my kitchen, and I get to play with yarn!? Keep reading to find out how!

Hey there! I hope everyone has been doing alright during this pandemic. As for me, other than crocheting of course, my nerdy husband and I have been recently addicted to the Among Us game that has been receiving a lot of attention lately. Yes, I've hopped onto that bandwagon, and while here I have come up with a few patterns of my own. This is going to be my first PDF pattern that I will be selling, so I'm already excited about that, but also I have recently opened my online store so things have been a little crazy around here.

Fall is a great season for us yarn crafters. Knit and crocheted hats, gloves, sweaters, and scarves sell like crazy at fall craft fairs and are the #1 seller for us online. Holidays are around the corner so gift buying begins around this time, and crochet Halloween costumes have been a hit these past few years.
With that being said, as a maker I'm sure you all know that patterns are a dime a dozen. There are just so many to choose from, both free and paid. I enjoy making scarves as they are simple and great for beginning crafters. I looked everywhere for a triangle scarf pattern using velvet yarn and it surprised me that I couldn't find it so I made one. This is a very easy to make pattern and makes great gifts for the holidays.

Sunflowers are very important to me personally. The very first flower I received from my husband was a sunflower. His grandmother loved sunflowers. Our wedding was decorated with sunflowers. I absolutely love them. That being said, there are many different appliques out there for sunflowers. I honestly love every single one that I have seen and made. Still, I just had to make my own. I had made my own twisted sun applique pattern this past summer and so I tweaked it a little to make it into a sunflower and I really like how it turned out. Now that I have that done, I just have to share it with everyone!

As summer slowly fades into fall, I find myself crocheting more. More hats, gloves, and of course, scarves. They are perfect for the cooler weather, and accessorize any outfit nicely. Everyone has their preferences when it comes to them. Some like theirs long, some prefer short, and others have to have the bulky to the point you can't see their neck type. Either way you like it, it's getting to be scarf season ya'll! I love the look of braids and wanted to make my own braided scarf pattern. Let me say, it looks way more complicated than it actually is. This pattern would be a perfect first project for a beginner, since it only uses a few basic stitches, that repeat throughout the pattern. If you're getting ready to participate in a fall craft fair, I recommend hooking up a few of these. This project took maybe a half hour for me, and if you're new I don't see it taking any longer than two hours (and that's going snail speed).

Crocheted appliques are a great way to accent any project you plan on making. They can give simple, and basic blankets a little extra touch. They can help bring a splash of color where it's needed most. They can help decorate your items to match sports themes, holidays, and seasons. In the crochet community, there are hundreds of appliques and each have their own uniqueness to them.
Recently I have been creating my own little appliques and I will be sharing them with you as I get them all typed up. They are cute little ones that I have enjoyed not only making, but also using them in projects I've been working on recently. I hope you will become attached to them, just as I have. (Get it, attached...ahh I'm getting old..) Anyway, today I wanted to share this cute little twisted sun applique, so let's get started!

There are a TON of DIY sugar/salt scrubs out there. Some are good, some are bad, but if you know what you are doing you can whip up your own and save some money from buying it at the store. In the past I have shared my recipe for a DIY Charcoal Sugar Face Scrub, and yes my skin loves it, but it's not my favorite. Today, I want to share with you one of my favorite sugar face scrub recipes and tell you how to make your own!

Working with, and getting to know this creator has been such a hoot! I have had nothing but fun making these spotlights and will continue to follow Spunky Owl as it grows and progresses. As of now she no longer runs her store or blog and is just crocheting for her hobby, but these are still great ideas for you to create on your own!
As a crochet community we should be lifting each other up. Constantly encouraging each other to grow. This maker has been one of my biggest advocates. She has cheered me on and applauded me, making me feel truly a part of this community. We all need a little more of her spunk! So here it is, to finish out the month of May, I thought I would shine a light on some of her other projects and patterns she had made for inspiration!

I am so glad to be done with the colder weather! Time for warm summer nights, days at the beach, hiking, camping, fishing, Ahhhh! I'm very excited as you can tell. I made a new crochet water bottle holder, inspired by granny clusters. I used sets of two instead of sets of three and I really like how this turned out! You can easily add accessories to it, including bows, buttons, flowers, etc.

Hello, hello! Tomorrow is Mother's Day! I hope everyone has gotten those beautiful women cards and gifts! I am personally hoping for a new bag. Whether it be a shopping bag, messenger bag, or even a clutch, I'm a sucker for handbags.
Women's jeans just do not have enough pocket space. I tried borrowing my husbands jeans, whose pockets were perfect, but he says I take his favorite ones and then he has to wait for them to be washed again. So until they do, bring on the bags!

May the fourth be with you!! Welcome back to my spotlight Saturday, I am so happy I have the privilege of introducing a new craft store owner to you today! The Spunky Owl and my own blog both began this past February 2019! We also obtained 100 followers on the exact same day on Instagram, and are both self taught hookers. Crazy, right!?
I have been following her these past few months and she has come so far in the short amount of time she has been open. It is truly inspiring how much she has been able to accomplish! Without further ado, let me introduce the Spunky Owl!

For my final spotlightsaturday in April, I figured why not top it off with The Tangled Knot's Hats. Sorry, I couldn't help but throw that pun in. Anyway, I've had the pleasure of introducing you all to her work for the first week of April here. Then, I showcased all the things she's made for children in this post.
Due to Easter, I did not post a spotlight Saturday last week. Since I originally planned to only do three each month however, this still worked out just fine for my posting schedule.

Babies!! I'm having baby fever something terrible. I know I shouldn't, but I want another little baby! I absolutely love my kids, and having another one is going to happen I just don't know when. One of our family members is about to have a baby girl and I can't wait to meet this cute thing! Since she's on her way, I have been making a few things for baby including sandals, a diaper cover, and now this adorable Jack Skellington lovie. Mom is a huge fan of The Nightmare Before Christmas, so I figured this would be right at home.

Have you ever met someone with a big heart? Chances are you have, people are constantly doing something extraordinarily kind for other people. That's not covered in the news stories though. Recently, all I can find in the news is depressing, negative stories. Well, I want to change that. Did you know that The Tangled Knot donated to Flinders Medical Centre? It's NICU received ten (10) of these adorable crochet octopuses. I'm positive that the families who received them were delighted!

This is the third and final spotlight for Shay & Co Boutique. It has been an absolute pleasure to help promote this small business. This month's posts were not sponsored, nor did I receive any compensation for them. Be sure to stop by her store and see what's new!
In our first post we looked at her pom beanies. When I think of winter I think of hats, gloves, scarves, and of course, snow. These pom hats are exactly the iconic winter hats that I picture in my mind. If you didn't get a chance to read that post, get to know more about Shay & Co Boutique here.

For the past two years Pokémon™ has come back as a new fad. I say come back because I was trading cards as a child before everyone thought it was cool. I remember my parents calling them "pokeman cards". The nostalgia is real right now!
The animal like characters are adorable, they have elemental powers, and the series has some good storylines to it. My favorite backstory is that of Team Rocket's Meowth. If you don't know it I definitely recommend you read up on it here.

I've been really into these DIY sugar scrubs recently. Whether it's for the face or body, I'm absolutely in love with my silky smooth skin, and in the winter that's saying something. I've found tons of DIY recipes to make your own, but there were also a lot of comments with people editing the recipe because it didn't come out right. The ingredients are inexpensive enough, but this frugal momma still wasn't going to waste them making something that didn't seem to be working. So, being the resourceful mother that I am, I decided to just make my own. No surprise here, I am really glad that I did!

Okay, so you figured out a brand, domain name, and web hosting. Now what? Before you start thinking website design and themes, let's think legal! I know, I know, but if you're serious about starting a blog then lets get serious for real! Not only do you not want to end up in court, but if you are looking to monetize your blog then this is important!
Google Adsense for example has prerequisites such as having an already established blog with a good number of unique visitors and at least 35 posts with original and engaging content. Alright, but did you know you're also required to have a privacy policy, terms of use, and disclosures/disclaimers involving what affiliates you work with. Let's jump into this a bit more, now that I have your attention. |
